Bitter Cherry

The Bitter Cherry tree or the Prunus Emarginata is short tree. It can only grow up to 9 meters in height and its trunk is slender. Its bark is grayish or reddish in colour with orange lenticels (horizontal slits). The bark also tastes bitter and peels horizontally. The Bitter Cherry tree has oval shaped, light green or yellowish leaves. These leaves can range from 2-8 centimeters in length. The flowers that grow on this tree are small and white and grow in clusters of 5-12. The cherries that are produced are small, dark red and juicy though, because they are bitter, they were only eaten occasionally by the aboriginal people. They used the wood from the tree to make baskets due to the fact that it was tough and waterproof. They also pounded it to soften and use it to make baskets and mats as well as for joints in house building.
